The 92SB featured an ambidextrous slide mounted safety, three dot sights, and most importantly relocated the magazine release from the heel of the grip to behind the trigger guard for faster reloading. The 92S saw great success with European law enforcement and militaries, and later evolved into the Beretta 92SB, which was designed for the United States military trials. Subsequently, the 92S and almost all subsequent models of the 92 series cannot be carried cocked and locked. This was later updated into the 92S, which transferred the safety to the slide and also made it decock the pistol when it was engaged. The original 92 featured a frame mounted safety and a heel magazine safety. It combined the open slide, grip angle, and basic look of the M1951, the DA/SA design of the P38, and the locking blocks from both pistols. How did the 92 develop? Long story short, Beretta took their M1951 pistol, combined it with the proven DA/SA design of the Walther P38, gave it a double stack magazine, and the original Beretta 92 was born in 1976. In fact, many of those who are not even into guns can look at a 92 and identify it simply as a “Beretta” by what they’ve seen in movies and video games. But it’s their 92/M9 pistol that the company is without question the most well known for. Today, Beretta has maintained its status as one of the premier gun manufacturers, producing a variety of pistols, shotguns, and rifles. Over a hundred years later, Beretta was the second largest manufacturer of gun barrels in the world, supplying arms to countries all across the globe. Originally located in Val Trompia, an iron mine located in Italy, the first documented transaction from Beretta was in 1526. The firing sound of the Beretta in Max Payne is also used for the Pistol in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars. Here’s a fun fact: Beretta is the oldest firearms manufacturer still making guns today. The Beretta is likely an homage John Woo films, as the game takes heavy inspiration from his signature action flicks, and the 92FS is known to be Woo's favourite handgun. In the time period the games are set in, authorised NYPD service handguns were the Glock 19, SIG-Sauer P226, and Smith & Wesson 5946. In reality, the Beretta 92FS is not an authorised service weapon of the NYPD.In Max Payne 2, it is based on a real 92FS. The model in Max Payne is not actually based on a Beretta 92FS, but rather the Reck Miami 92F, a blank-firing replica made by the German company Umarex. It is a common weapon of the Squeaky Cleaning Company. It is largely the same as the first game, but has a slightly lower magazine capacity (16 instead of 18). In Max Payne 2, the handgun is now known as the "9mm Pistol". Mercenaries rarely, if ever, use the Beretta, while the Killer Suits use them infrequently. It is frequently used by Punchinello Crime Family mobsters. Later on, it is largely a backup weapon as it begins to lose effectiveness against stronger enemies. In the early game, the Beretta is a general jack-of-all-trades, being servicable at close-to-mid-range but is beaten out by the Ingram and shotguns in the former, and the Desert Eagle in the latter. The Beretta can kill most enemies in three or four shots. Although the pistol has average accuracy and damage, ammo is very abundant, and when dual-wielded the Beretta's rate of fire is second only to the Ingram.
